The World We Made

Another capture by Aisling Webb from that magical night at Mendoza way back in 2014.

Recording has been where all my energy has gone the past 3 weeks, so … here’s another song.

But wow, I have made it through the stash of 25 (and added a 26th because reasons) so I’m feeling pretty stoked about that! Nothing to beat the summer blues like making things you’re really happy with. And I do get the summer blues, y’all, and it’s been bad this time. Uffda. But I’m doing way better, and getting these languishing songs recorded has been a huge part of that.

This one is fairly new, written within the last couple of years for sure. We’ve gone from floods to drought. Maybe it’s been three years. I wrote it when the farmers were complaining that they’d plant and a flood would wash all their seed away. I mean, not whining, but I suppose that’s definitely something to complain about. It would certainly put a wrinkle in your foundation garments. And the winter had been blisteringly cold, and then the summer got ungodly hot. It was the trifecta in a single year. So I wrote a song about it. Because of course I did. Weather Witch.

So yeah, I’ve only got one song left to record, and it’s the one I can’t find a demo recording of. I think I remember enough of it to resurrect it, and hopefully what I do remember will suggest what I don’t. Once this recording adventure is over, I will be writing more – and hey, new stuff – I’m going to be recording myself reading the posts (no, aloud, you silly, not silently, sheesh!), so those folks who like to listen to things while they do the dishes or take the dog for a walk can enjoy my wit and wisdom that way. I’m a whole damn multimedia experience right here.

Enjoy The World We Made.

The World We Made

There’s a bitter wind howling ‘cross a land covered in ice and snow
I’ve never seen it so cold here, never seen it this far below
And you can’t go outside for a minute before your skin starts to freeze
They say, “Where’s your global warming now?” Honey, it’s about the extremes

But hey, welcome to the world we made
We should be so proud
Welcome to a brand new age
Of climate change

Now the rain keeps on coming, so much the farmers can’t plant their seeds
And food is gonna get scarce if it all keeps washing downstream
Whole towns are going under, families are losing everything they own
These brutal storms are taking away everything that makes this place a home

Now there’s heat without mercy, in a blink we go from floods to drought
I've never seen it so hot here, a heartless, cruel and withering shroud
We’re running out of water, and crops are dying under an unforgiving sun
How can you not understand what our carelessness and greed have done?

Are we gonna stand here and call each other names?
Are we just gonna stand here while the world goes up in flames?
